PATIENT RESOURCES

Hospital Admission Period

ADMISSION:

Check in is usually at 6am. Arrive at reception with your authorisation, medical aid card and Identity document.

Once the paperwork in admissions is completed, you will be directed to the Orthopaedic ward.

In the Orthopaedic ward you will be admitted by the nursing staff, meet the Anaesthetist and Physiotherapists and Dr Rob Barrow will mark the site.

Please have your chronic medications available to show the Anaesthetist, who will assess you prior to theatre.

POST SURGERY:

PREVENTION OF VENOUS THROMBOSIS:

If not proactively managed this can be a dangerous complication.

Our preventative management includes the type of anaesthetic given , the use of calf pumps intra and post operatively, vascular stockings for up to 4 weeks post op as well as blood thinners for 4 weeks post op.

You will be prescribed oral blood thinners for 4 weeks unless these are contraindicated.

PREVENTION OF INFECTION:

The mainstay of prevention of infection is the way the soft tissues are handled during surgery minimising cautery and stretching of the tissues.

Prevention of infection also includes pre-op chlorhexidine wash, another pre-op wash in the ward, special laminar flow theatres, disposable high quality drapes and gowns and prophylactic antibiotics.

CATHETERISATION:

We do not routinely use a catheter as this may have an infective risk.

However, it is not uncommon for patients to go into retention post- op. If the patient has not passed urine within 8 hours post-op, a catheter may need to be inserted.

POST-OP MOBILISATION IN HOSPITAL:

Our physiotherapy team will begin with bed exercises.

Initially you will get to stand, then walk with a frame and get to the toilet.

This will then be advanced to crutch walking and assistance on climbing stairs, and how to cope with the activities of daily living.
