Knee
Total and Uni-Knee Replacement Surgery and Protocols
Initial Consultation:
- A thorough medical history is taken, and patients undergo a clinical assessment by Dr. Robert Barrow.
- If a knee replacement is deemed appropriate, a detailed explanation of the procedure, including the types of implants used and rehabilitation protocols, is provided.
Pre-Operative Assessment:
- A full medical history and clinical assessment are completed.
- Pre-operative knee X-rays and blood tests are conducted.
- Some patients may require an additional assessment by a physician before surgery.
Operation Day:
- Patients must fast from midnight before the surgery day.
- Admission takes place on the morning of the surgery at Mediclinic Morningside.
- Pre-operative assessment by the Anesthetist is conducted before the operation.
- The surgical site is prepared by the ward staff.
- A post-operative X-ray is done after the procedure.
Post-Operative Management:
- Rehabilitation is managed by skilled Arthroplasty Physiotherapists.
- Mobilization begins the day after surgery.
- Most patients are ready for discharge on Day 1 or 2 post-surgery.
- If additional recovery support is needed, step-down facilities can be arranged.
Post-Discharge Protocol:
- 2 weeks post-surgery: Dr. Robert Barrow will review the wound as an outpatient.
- 6 weeks post-surgery: Dr. Robert Barrow will conduct a clinical review and a control X-ray.
- Physiotherapists will review patients at 2, 4, and 6 weeks to monitor progress.
