Hip Replacement Surgery and Protocols
Pre-Operative Assessment:
- Patients undergo a thorough history review and clinical assessment by Dr. Robert Barrow.
- If hip replacement surgery is recommended, a full explanation of the procedure, including the implants used and rehabilitation protocols, is provided.
- Pre-operative tests, including a pelvic X-ray and blood tests, are conducted.
- Some patients may also need a pre-operative assessment by a physician.
Operation:
- Patients must fast from midnight before surgery.
- Admission takes place on the morning of surgery at Mediclinic Morningside.
- The Anaesthetist assesses the patient before surgery.
- The surgical site is prepared by ward staff and marked by Dr. Robert Barrow.
- A follow-up X-ray is taken after the surgery.
Post-Operative Management:
- Post-operative rehabilitation is guided by a team of skilled Arthroplasty Physiotherapists.
- Mobilisation starts the day after surgery.
- Physiotherapists provide detailed instructions on the do’s and don’ts following hip replacement.
- Most patients are ready for discharge on Day 1 or Day 2 post-surgery.
- Step-down facilities are available for patients needing extra recovery assistance.
Post-Discharge Protocol:
- At 2 weeks post-surgery: Dr. Robert Barrow conducts a wound review during an outpatient visit.
- At 6 weeks post-surgery: Dr. Barrow performs a clinical review and a control X-ray.
- Physiotherapy follow-ups occur at 2, 4, and 6 weeks to monitor recovery progress.
