Hip Replacement Surgery and Protocols

Pre-Operative Assessment:

  • Patients undergo a thorough history review and clinical assessment by Dr. Robert Barrow.
  • If hip replacement surgery is recommended, a full explanation of the procedure, including the implants used and rehabilitation protocols, is provided.
  • Pre-operative tests, including a pelvic X-ray and blood tests, are conducted.
  • Some patients may also need a pre-operative assessment by a physician.

Operation:

  • Patients must fast from midnight before surgery.
  • Admission takes place on the morning of surgery at Mediclinic Morningside.
  • The Anaesthetist assesses the patient before surgery.
  • The surgical site is prepared by ward staff and marked by Dr. Robert Barrow.
  • A follow-up X-ray is taken after the surgery.

Post-Operative Management:

  • Post-operative rehabilitation is guided by a team of skilled Arthroplasty Physiotherapists.
  • Mobilisation starts the day after surgery.
  • Physiotherapists provide detailed instructions on the do’s and don’ts following hip replacement.
  • Most patients are ready for discharge on Day 1 or Day 2 post-surgery.
  • Step-down facilities are available for patients needing extra recovery assistance.

Post-Discharge Protocol:

  • At 2 weeks post-surgery: Dr. Robert Barrow conducts a wound review during an outpatient visit.
  • At 6 weeks post-surgery: Dr. Barrow performs a clinical review and a control X-ray.
  • Physiotherapy follow-ups occur at 2, 4, and 6 weeks to monitor recovery progress.
