Orthopaedic Tree of Andry
Artist: James Delaney
Commissioned by Robert Barrow
Created: 2024
Nicholas Andry holds an important place in the history of orthopaedics and medicine as it was Andry who first used the word “orthopaedics” in a book published in 1741.
Within the section on limb deformities, Andry illustrated the “crooked tree”, he recommended a bent leg be corrected by bandaging it to an iron plate as was commonly done to straighten the crooked trunk of a sapling.
This artwork was commissioned by Dr Barrow in reverence to his patients that he has operated on. The prostheses from his revision patients, covering the tree have been repurposed to create this masterpiece.

The Ronadró Collection Hip Sculpture
Crafted for Dr Rob Barrow in 2010
The Ronadró Collection consists of medical and dental bronze sculptures and porcelain figurines crafted by the master artist, Ronadró.
Ronadró sculptures have been housed in some of the world’s most famous museums, including the Smithsonian Institute, the National Museum of Dentistry, the John B. Harris Museum and in many universities throughout the world.
Ronadró’s works of art can be found in over 80 countries, and his works have touched many far and wide. Ronadró in his time was the only sculptor specialising in the field of medical and dental art.
“Everyone has been given his or her special talents,” said Ronadró. “What they do with that talent tells a story. The only credit a person can take is what he decides to do with that talent, and how he works to develop it.”
Ronadró passed away in 2012, in Austin, Texas. Through Ronadró’s work, his spirit lives on. He brought exuberance, joy, passion and perfection to every work of art.
